Considerations ~
  • All ovens vary in performance. It is recommended that the fabricator establishes a Heating/Time Schedule specific to the thickness and sizes of material being used in their ovens. Always record your successes and failures for future reference.
  • This thermoplastic material is commonly used in Prosthetic applications when rigidity is required.
  • Its rigidity is desirable for cost effective Prosthetic “Check Socket” applications. It is not designed to be used as a primary long term socket. This material is “Earth Friendly” in the fact that it will eventually decompose. It’s impact resistance and forming capabilities to your plaster models is desirable. A pre-heated model will increase the strength of your “Check Socket”. The reduced cooling rate will strengthen the material. You must achieve specified forming temperatures when processing. Always use a laser thermometer to assure the material has reached its forming temperature. Remember that the surface temperature of the material can be warmer than its core. Establishing your material-oven time frames to acquire the material’s core forming temperature is critical to your success.
  • Holes drilled in this material should have their edges relieved or slightly countersunk to try to prevent the hole from cracking at an attachment point.
  • These thermoplastics are extruded in Belgium and have been used primarily in prosthetic socket applications for decades. The wide range of flexibility offers your lab a material for the majority of prosthetic applications. There are also Orfitrans thermoplastics available for Orthotic applications. Contact us now to determine which Orfitrans product suits your needs. We will be pleased to work with you to improve everyone’s fabrication results.
